The Zeta Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is committed to our fraternity's aims of manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind, as well as our national programs, one of which is Go-to-High School, Go-To-College. Therefore, the collaborative vision of the chapter's Educational Activities Committee and the Zeta Iota Lambda Education Foundation is to offer educational experiences and resources to young men of African and Latino descent in the Greater Mercer County area to increase their access to higher education.

We are pleased to announce that we will be offering scholarships to deserving young men who are graduating high school in 2024 and who plan to attend an accredited college or university in the 2024-2025 school year.

All scholarship awards will be payable upon verification of full-time enrollment in a college or university.

Note: Minimum high school G.P.A. of 2.5/4.0 or equivalent required to apply.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS/CHECKLIST: (You may want to print this page for future use.)

1. Completed Scholarship Application - Some questions are required; others are optional. However, the strongest applications are those where we have the best understanding of the applicant, due to the completion of all questions.

2. High School Transcript - transcripts should include as much academic information as possible, particularly the applicant's performance in their junior high school year, as that is the year typically heavily weighted in college admissions decisions.

3. Headshot Photograph of the candidate, preferably wearing a Dress Shirt, Tie, and Jacket. A cellular phone quality is okay. However, please refrain from taking the photo as a "selfie."

4. Minimum of Two Recommendations -- Recommendations can came from any adult who knows the character, academic aptitude and strengths of the candidate. It is recommended that candidates seek recommendations from their teachers, guidance counselor, or school administrators. It is also a benefit if one recommendation comes from a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. These recommendations are to be sent by the recommenders directly to the ZIL Foundation.

5. Typed Essay, 500-700 words in length, on the following topic: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is a fraternity of distinguished leaders such as Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, Jesse Owens, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Write an essay that speaks to how you feel Alpha Phi Alpha's tenets you unite these men, and how the tenets of the fraternity would impact you personally and scholastically.

6. Parent/Guardian Certification: Parent/Guardian(s) should send a separate email from their personal account to the ZIL foundation, stating the following:  "I (parent name) have consented to my son applying for the ZIL Education Foundation Scholarship. I have read my child's application and can attest that what he has written is an accurate depiction of his character and accomplishments. I also give consent to the chapter and the foundation to use my son's likeness in its promotions should my child be selected as a scholarship recipient." It should be signed with a physical address and telephone number listed in case the committee seeks to contact the parent directly.

SELECTION PROCESS:

1. Scholarship candidates should complete the application completed online. All other items are to be emailed to zilapafoundation@gmail.com with the applicant's name in the subject heading.

2. All material must be submitted by Friday, May 17, 2024 at 11:59pm (EST).  At the deadline, incomplete applications will not be considered.

3. Application review and ranking will be immediately.  At the discretion of the scholarship committee, an interview may be scheduled to ascertain more information or become better acquainted with the candidate.

4. Winners will be informed on June 7, 2024, the chapter's anniversary, and acknowledged on its website and social media outlets.

We look forward to hearing from you and getting to know you through this process.  If there are any questions or concerns, please contact the Scholarship Committee at zilapafoundation@gmail.com
